The Mysterious Unsolved Case of the Hinterkaifek Murders

On a cold winter's night in 1922, in a secluded farmstead located in the rural town of Hinterkaifeck, Germany, a family met a gruesome fate. The Gruber family, consisting of Andreas (63) and Cäzilia Gruber (72), their 35-year-old, widowed daughter Viktoria, her two young children, and the maid Maria Baumgartner (44), were all brutally murdered. The shocking discovery of their bodies days later sent shockwaves through the close-knit community.

Crime Scene

The murder weapon – a mattock (a small pick-axe) – were found in the attick, its handle splintered and stained with blood. Each victim had been struck repeatedly; their lives violently snuffed out. Their bodies were found in various locations on the property: Andreas and Cäzilie Gruber, Viktoria Gabriel and 7-year-old Cäzilia were found in the barn, stacked on top of each other and covered with hay. 2-year-old Josef’s body was found in his cot in the bedroom. The maid had been killed in the servants’ quarters, next to the kitchen. Her body was on the bed, fully covered with a blanket.

Investigators concluded that the victims were lured to the barn one-by-one, where they met their killer.

When Cäzilia failed to show up for school, and when the family missed Church the following Sunday, neighbours became concerned and visited the farm to check if they were okay, unprepared for the unimaginable horror that awaited them.

It was believed that the family had been murdered five days before their bodies were discovered, on Friday, March 31. Eerily, neighbours reported smoke coming from the chimney for days after the murders, meaning the killer remained in the house for a while.

Strangely, there were signs of unusual activity leading up to the murders. Andreas had told neighbours about mysterious footprints in the snow leading up to the barn, but no footprints leaving. After this, the keys went missing and they became aware of strange noises in the attic. However, when they went to check it out, no one was there.

Maria only started working for the Gruber family a week before the bloody murders. They had struggled to replace their previous maid, who had left because she claimed the house was haunted.

Investigation and Suspects

Despite an extensive investigation at the time, the case remains unsolved to this day.

The Grubers were entangled in scandal, as Andreas and his daughter Viktoria were accused of incest. They were charged, found guilty and both of them served time in prison. Upon their release, rumours were going around that they had resumed their “affair”. However, it was believed that it was not consensual, and that Andreas sexually assaulted his daughter. Infuriatingly, in those days, she bore as much blame as he did.

Viktoria was in fact romantically involved with their neighbour, Lorenz Schlittenbauer. When little Josef was born, Lorenz called him his son, but closer to the murders, villagers gossiped that Lorenz had found out the boy was in fact Andreas’ son. Could this have been a motive for murder? In the end, after extensive investigation, investigators ruled him out as a suspect.

Viktoria’s husband, Karl Gabriel, was believed to have died while serving at the front in the Great War. However, his body was never recovered. Another theory in the murder case was that Karl never died and that, upon his return learning his wife had had another child – and even worse, by her own father – he snapped and killed the entire family. Still, with no trace of Karl, this could not be proven.

Despite the fact that more than 100 people were questioned, there was never enough evidence to make any arrests. The unsolved case continued to puzzle locals, leaving them to wonder who had committed this heinous crime. Was it a local villager with a vendetta against the Gruber family? Or could it have been a deranged outsider, a drifter who took advantage of the remote location?

The Hinterkaifeck Murders have left behind a trail of unanswered questions that continue to baffle both amateur sleuths and seasoned investigators.
