24. Antarctica - The Mysterious Death of an Astrophysicist PODCAST

Rodney Marks was an Australian astrophysicist, who worked with the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory at the South Pole.

After a day’s work, he became violently ill. 24 hours later he would be dead. But due to the harsh weather conditions, it would be six months before his body could be transported to New Zealand for a post-mortem examination. After an excruciating wait, results showed that Rodney had died from methanol poisoning.

On the base were 49 other people, trapped in the winter cold. Was Rodney killed by one of his co-workers, or was his death a tragic accident?
